Andy Warhol’s relationship with China started in 1972, around the time that US President Nixon made his historic trip to China. Over the next decade, the famous artist would make hundreds of paintings of Chairman Mao; between just 1972 and 1973 alone the artist created 199 paintings of the Chinese leader.

In 1982 Warhol made his own, seminal trip to China. Warhol had originally been invited to Hong Kong by Alfred Siu, an industrialist who had commissioned paintings of British royalty for his new disco, but Siu surprised the group by arranging a VIP tour to Beijing. Christopher Makos, Warhol’s close friend and personal photographer, captured the trip on film. At the same time, Andy Warhol’s own photos of the trip give a fascinating glimpse of the two cities as seen from his eyes.
